Willow Work

Introducing Hanna Van Aelst

Hanna is a basket-maker who uses local willow to construct woven baskets, which showcase her deep understanding of material, craft, and place. Using materials grown herself or gleaned from the woods where she has made her home since moving to Ireland from Belgium some 10 years ago. Hanna works with over 20 different varieties of willow, harvesting annually from late November to mid-March. The willow is then dried and soaked in a process taking up to 18 days before becoming pliable and weave-able.
